Today is National Pretzel Day, or as some of us like to call it, “free pretzel day” — since a number of major chains are giving away free pretzels to celebrate. The biggest pretzel chain in the country is Auntie Anne’s, which is offering a free pretzel — with a catch.
You have to have the Auntie Anne’s “My Pretzel Perks” mobile app, and you’ll be sent a reward redeemable for one original or cinnamon sugar pretzel, which you can redeem between April 26 and May 1, 2016. And if you don’t already have the app on your phone, well, it’s too late to download it to claim a reward this year. (But you can always get a jump on next year’s National Pretzel Day.) There are more than 1,600 Auntie Anne’s worldwide, including many in New Jersey.
Other pretzel purveyors offering National Pretzel Day deals:
Wetzel’s Pretzels: All customers receive one free pretzel, while supplies last. If you “like” the popular chain Wetzel’s on any free social media platform, you can also upgrade your pretzel to a free order of “Pizza Bitz.” Just show your phone to the cashier. There are a number of Wetzel’s locations in New Jersey, including in Paramus and Woodbridge.
Pretzelmaker: Customers are asked to share a “message of kindness” on social media, use the hastag #WarmThoughts, and show your message to the cashier. Your reward is one free soft pretzel. There are no New Jersey locations, but numerous ones in New York City and the Hudson Valley.
Philly Pretzel Factory: A tongue twister challenge! Say the words “Pretzelmaker prepares perfectly pleasing pretzels for National Pretzel Day” and they’ll give you a free pretzel on National Pretzel Day. There are numerous locations in New Jersey and Philadelphia.
Oh, and if you are wondering how did National Pretzel Day get started? Apparently the tradition dates to 1983 when Rep. Robert S. Walker of Pennsylvania declared a day to commemorate pretzels. Glad our Congressmen are earning their keep.
